Wearable Spectroscopy: SERS, NIR, and Molecular Monitoring
Wearable spectroscopy sensors are advancing fast: SERS patches for sweat biomarkers, NIR glucose devices, and chip-scale spectrometers nearing clinical use.

Connect FOSS, Metrohm, ABB, and Bruker NIR analyzers to clinical and pharmaceutical workflows. SpectraDx automates NIR measurement, calibration management, and regulatory-compliant reporting.
Overview
Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy measures light absorption in the 780–2500 nm range — between visible light and mid-infrared. NIR bands arise from overtones and combinations of fundamental molecular vibrations, making NIR especially sensitive to O–H, C–H, and N–H bonds found in biological and pharmaceutical samples.
NIR has unique advantages for clinical applications: it penetrates deeper into tissue than FTIR or Raman, works non-invasively through skin, and instruments can be miniaturized for wearable devices. This enables continuous monitoring — blood glucose, tissue oxygenation, hemoglobin levels — without drawing blood.
The analytical challenge with NIR is that absorption bands are broad and overlapping, requiring chemometric models (PLS, PCR) rather than simple peak identification. SpectraDx manages the model lifecycle — calibration, validation, transfer between instruments — and converts chemometric predictions into clinical results.
Blood Glucose Monitoring
Non-invasive continuous glucose measurement through skin using NIR absorption spectroscopy
Tissue Oxygenation
Real-time cerebral and tissue oximetry for surgical monitoring and neonatal care
Blood Analysis
Rapid hemoglobin, hematocrit, and blood component analysis without wet chemistry
Pharmaceutical QC
Raw material identification, content uniformity testing, and at-line process monitoring
Instruments
SpectraDx provides modular instrument adapters. Each adapter handles vendor-specific protocols so your clinical workflow stays consistent.
FOSS
FOSS Integration Manager SDK for DS2500 and XDS series process and laboratory NIR analyzers.
Metrohm
Vision Air integration via OPC-UA for inline and at-line NIR analysis applications.
ABB
Process NIR analyzer integration via Modbus TCP and OPC-UA protocols for continuous monitoring.
Bruker
OPUS-based integration for the multipurpose FT-NIR analyzer with fiber optic probes.
NeoSpectra
Compact MEMS-based NIR sensor with open SDK — ideal for handheld and embedded clinical devices.
The Problem
Instrument vendor software like ISIscan (FOSS), Vision Air (Metrohm), OPUS (Bruker) is designed for research, not clinical deployment.
